WizeWorld Volume 95

Jun 10, 2022

Welcome to the 95th volume of WizeWorld: a collection of stories and sounds to round out your week, pique your curiosity, and widen your wizdom.

This week’s theme is innovation.

This week we’re highlighting the ways to fine-tune your body’s response to sugar while celebrating innovators like artists who create a burst of floral inspiration where you’d least expect it and a group of women working to extend the all-too-short coffee growing season with a brand new soap.

We’ll be looking at:

  • The subtle signs you’re eating too much sugar
  • An interview with skateboarder Malik Walker
  • Beautiful embroidery in the hollows of trees
  • A collection of Spicy Sounds by Morgs
  • Coffee soap that gives back to women in The DRC

Learn

When sugar is added to everything from bread to pasta sauce, it can be hard to limit your consumption unless you diligently read labels. But, as Eat This, Not That reports, a few grams here or there aren’t necessarily terrible… until they start to add up. They’ve compiled a list of four subtle signs that you may be eating too much sugar—weight gain, chronic pain, increased hunger, and high blood pressure—that offer a hint that it’s time to cut back. One great swap is switching out full-sugar soda for a sustainably-sweet can of Wize iced tea this summer.

Connect

An image of Malik Walker, a young Black man, leaping through the air on his skateboard as he cruises over concrete stairs.

Malik Walker has been skateboarding since he was five years old and, though he’s tried many sports since, he always comes back to his trusty deck. His biggest inspirations include Boo Johnson, Stevie Williams, and his own dad—who got him into skating and taught him the ropes. In five to 10 years, he’d love to be doing something that gives back to his community, whether through skating or something else. But while he is skating, he prefers Wize to sugar-laden energy drinks that give him a big boost or energy followed by a bigger crash.

See

From Colossal comes this series of striking embroidery from artist Diana Yevtukh. Yevtukh is a Ukranian artist who creates bright fauna (like birds) or florals (like poppies, daisies, and sunflowers) with needle and thread in the hollows of trees, old stone walls, and rusting metal. The idea is to “heal” the damage by creating the image of natural beauty where you’d least expect it.

Get inspired

To wrap things up, Sprudge brings us the story of Heshima Coffee. Cascara, honey, and coffee leaf (that’s us!) are three products that coffee farmers can produce to extend the all-too-short growing and harvesting season. But in 2018, Heshima Coffee discovered a fourth: coffee soap, made from coffee plant seedlings. The initiative enables the women who work there to earn more than they would on someone else’s coffee farm, allowing them to better provide for their families and community. The company produces around 5000 bars of the coffee-infused soap per week and is available for sale in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Burundi, and Rwanda. Here’s hoping they expand soon so we can all shower in coffee-infused goodness.
