WizeWorld Volume 107

Sep 2, 2022

Welcome to the 107th volume of WizeWorld: a collection of stories and sounds to round out your week, pique your curiosity, and widen your wizdom.

This week’s theme is future state thinking: what will the houses of the future look like? How can we take small steps to create a better world? And how can we turn bowling, guitar playing and other everyday activities into ways to improve our personal health and fitness?

We’ll be looking at:

  • The everyday activities that count as exercise
  • An interview with skateboarder Zoe Zollinger
  • Off-the-grid, light-powered architecture
  • DnB Monday with Deadaelus, Willisist and JRoy
  • How gentle activism can still be radical

Ever heard of NEAT? It stands for Non-Exercise Activity Thermogenesis and it covers every way that your body burns calories when you’re not actively exercising. Some experts believe that NEAT is just as important as hitting the gym for your long-term health. So we’ve brought you Lifehacker’s list of their favorite ways to up your fitness without barbells or a treadmill.

Enjoy this interview with 15 year old skateboarder Zoe Zollinger. Zoe hails from Nanaimo, BC and has been skating ever since Covid hit. Just a couple years later, Zoe has ambitions to become a pro skater like some of her biggest inspirations—Sky Brown and Ruby Lilley. And unlike lots of kids her age, Zoe doesn’t reach for sugary drinks when she needs a hit of energy. Instead, she loves everything from plain to fizzy water and cans of Wize to get her through the day. Zoe’s entering competitions and improving her skills daily, and you can follow her progress on Instagram

See

Swedish architecture firm Naturvillan creates designs that work with nature and could provide a blueprint for how we live in the future. One example is this light-filled A-frame house located in Vänersborg, Sweden that has minimal impact on the environment. That includes a wood-burning stove, on-site wells, a waste filtration system and solar panels—all of which provide energy production and everyday necessities in both winter and summer, along with a backup system in case of extreme weather. Plus the first floor contains a raised garden large enough to grow fruits and vegetables.

Listen

A selection of after-dark dance mixes from Deadaelus, Willisist and JRoy make up this bonus edition of B-Side Radio’s DnB Monday. B-Side Radio is an online community radio station that operates out of The Beaumont Studios Artist Society in Vancouver BC. Read more about them here.

There are many ways to be quietly radical in your everyday life and Positive News provides real, tangible examples that make a difference. Whether it’s getting enough rest, mending what you have instead of throwing it away, or switching off social media for a while, these are all small steps you can take to build a better world.
